The plot of THE BELLS GO DOWN will sound like a bummer because it details war, death, sadness, and all the factors that go into a B-movie tearjerker. MacDougall and Black (author of the original novel) have devised a funny and heartwarming script using the above elements. Friend and Hiatt, a young twosome about to be wed in London's East End, decide to hold off due to the outbreak of war. Friend joins the AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service) and serves under Currie and Mason. Despite animosities between the professional firefighters and the amateurs, they unite every time the Germans fly schedules a flight over London. Friend and Hiatt eventually get married, and their home is burned down while he is busily saving a warehouse across the road. Trinder, a greyhound bettor, and Johns, a petty thief, also volunteer and are part of the coterie of interesting characters. Trinder dies while attempting vainly to save Currie, and Friend and Hiatt name their new child after Trinder, in honor of his valor. Johns has been avoiding a cop all through the movie and now finds he must save the self-same bobby from drowning. Amazingly, the events depicted on the screen were also happening in real life outside; Ealing filmed this between air raids. Screenwriter MacDougall may be better remembered for scripting THE FOREMAN WENT TO FRANCE; THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT; and THE MOUSE THAT ROARED. leave a comment
