This big-budget horror movie from respected director John Schlesinger is, given its sensational premise, surprisingly dull. Psychologist Cal Jamison (Martin Sheen), who is widowed in the very effective opening scene, moves to New York City with his young son (Harley Cross) and gets a job with the police department. Soon he is embroiled in an investigation of NYC's Santeria religious community and its evil sect, Brujeria, which has been sacrificing humans. As Cal digs deeper, he learns that the cult has designs on his son for their next sacrifice. Although THE BELIEVERS does contain a few effective moments, it is marred by some unfortunate racism and a misleading presentation of Santeria, a complex religion created by African slaves that combines Catholic iconography with native beliefs. While the film completely unravels shortly after the opening scene, there a few good performances (notably from Robert Loggia) and the gorgeous cinematography of Robby Muller to cling to as it sinks into a confused abyss. leave a comment
