Strong cast in a story about a Japanese naval officer (Boyer) who forces his wife to mimic western ways. Boyer is so ambitious that he manipulates and forces his delicate wife, Oberon, into an extramarital dalliance with Loder, the British naval attache who is aboard Boyer's vessel as an observer. There are Japanese naval maneuvers taking place and Boyer wants to learn what Loder thinks of them. He uses his wife as a pawn in the intelligence game. In order to get to read Loder's report on the maneuvers, Boyer arranges a liaison between his wife and Loder. In the end, Loder dies in an explosion and Boyer commits hara-kiri over having betrayed Oberon, whom he truly loved, more than he loved his country. This is a unique, well-done film, the premise of which was never used before or since--that a military man would sacrifice his wife to gain information was a strong pill for many in the audience to take, and the movie was not the success that had been expected. Loder (born John Lowe in 1898) made many films in his lengthy career and is particularly remembered for his work in NOW VOYAGER. leave a comment
