This low-budget adaptation of Genet's play is an improvement on the stage piece, eliminating much of the blue language that seemed present only to shock. The story preceded "Fantasy Island" by several years, but the two works are very similar. "The Balcony" is a fabulous brothel where you can have your fantasies realized. It's administered by Winters (slimmer, prettier than Ricardo Montalban) and her occasional lover, police chief Falk (taller, funnier than Herve Villechaize). The plot is loose, but the marvelous attention to detail makes this a worthwhile film despite what you may have heard to the contrary. Also interesting are the early appearances of Nimoy (Spock in STAR TREK), Jameson, Grant (now also a director), and Corey (for years Hollywood's favorite acting coach). Folsey received an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. leave a comment
