Peruvian director Javier Corcuera's thought-provoking feature-length documentary is really a collection of three short films, each focusing on individuals whom Corcuera feels represent the oppressed and forgotten people who inhabit "the back of the world." The first, "El Niño" ("The Child"), is the story of Guinder Rodriguez, an 11-year-old boy from the impoverished Peruvian village of Carabayllo. Six days a week, Guinder rises at 6:30 and, with a sledge hammer slung over his shoulder, makes his way into the stone quarries where he and the other villagers heat boulders over burning tires, then split them into pieces.
