BABYSITTER, THE
starstarstarstar
A pre-CLUELESS Alicia Silverstone is the title character, a nubile high schooler who becomes the unwitting belle de jour of a small town's masculine imagination. During an evening fraught with sexual threat, her frustrated boyfriend (Jeremy London), salacious middle-aged employer (J.T. Walsh) and barely pubescent charge (Ryan Slater) all construct elaborate fantasy scenarios that typically feature Silverstone sponging herself in a warm, sudsy bath. By-the-numbers video sleaze, right? Hardly. Based on a short story by acclaimed novelist Robert Coover and cunningly directed by newcomer Guy Ferland, THE BABYSITTER is a stinging, provocative subversion of our expectations. Ironically, this self-conscious expose of movie voyeurism landed briefly on the soft-core shelves of video parlors before it was rescued for theatrical release. leave a comment
