You have to give THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB credit: it dares to be uncool, dares to target wholesome pre-teen girls (who gobble up bland Baby-Sitters Club novels like strawberry licorice whips), dares, in the end, not to be daring. The story of seven sweet, responsible, suburban girls who organize a baby-sitting service, it's a candyfloss fantasy of unthreatening adolescents, a desexualized, harmoniously multicultural bunch of pint-sized entrepreneurs in designer duds. Surprisingly, it's not bad on the whole (in an "Afterschool Special" kind of way), and the young stars are uniformly appealing, especially Schuyler Fisk (Sissy Spacek's daughter) and CROOKLYN's Zelda Harris. leave a comment
