Character actor William Bendix brings bravado and color to every frame of this sanitized but enjoyable biopic that glosses over Babe Ruth's legendary excesses. THE BABE RUTH STORY begins in Baltimore as the young George Herman Ruth (Bobby Ellis) is taken from his father's waterfront saloon and placed in St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, where the kindly Brother Mathias (Charles Bickford) introduces him to sandlot baseball. Bendix takes over as the Babe begins his stellar career on the diamond, first as a brilliant pitcher with the Boston Red Sox, then as a New York Yankee, swinging for the fences as no one (save Hank Aaron) has done since, pounding out 60 home runs in 1927 and winning the hearts of baseball fans everywhere. Claire Trevor does a nice turn as the second Mrs. Ruth, and Fred Lightner is excellent as famed manager Miller Huggins, but Bendix is unquestionably the star of the show. Having studied films of Ruth endlessly, until he was able to imitate his stance, walk, unique mannerisms, and facial expressions, Bendix became so good at being the Babe that it is difficult to tell where the Bendix action shots leave off and the newsreel clips of the real Ruth begin. Sadly, cancer claimed Ruth shortly after the release of the film. Note the presence of real-life sportscasters Harry Wismer and Mel Allen. leave a comment
