The Assisi Underground: Review
It's 1943 and Hitler's forces are in Italy crushing a rebellion against Mussolini's fascist rule. The story takes place in the tranquil village of Assisi, where padre Cross runs the Franciscan mission of San Damiano. From bishop Mason (in one of his final assignments) the priest learns Rome's Jews are racing away from the German invaders, trying to get to the port of Genoa to board ships from neutral countries. Naturally, Mason chooses the brave and capable Cross to help the fleeing Jews. Soon Cross is in charge of protecting hundreds of Jews, hiding them in churches, convents, and monasteries in and around Assisi. Director-screenwriter Alexander Ramati, a Polish Jew, adapted this true story from his own "documentary novel," for which he did extensive research. Cross, best remembered for his work in CHARIOTS OF FIRE, prepared for his role by checking in to the San Damiano monastery and having his head tonsured in friar fashion. Despite the honest efforts that went into the picture (Giuseppe Rotunno's photography in particular), one wishes it were as poignant as its subject matter.
