Zany and contrived fantasy based on an ancient vaudeville farce, the film deals with a group of French Army trainees going through their rigors as the actors and director de Givray spoof the military and everything else in sight. Not much of a story and a lot of sophomoric nonsense such as de Tiliere imagining himself performing a ballet with a ravishing dancer over the obstacle course. The forced humor is blatant and appears in the English subtitles; at one point a skywriter smokes up the sky with the words "Le Cahier du Cinema," which is translated as "Read Variety." Director de Givray even has his mentor, Francois Truffaut, make a cameo appearance and takes delight in a bumbling safe-cracking scene that spoofs RIFIFI. leave a comment
