A disturbing black comedy with Davis (wearing an eye patch) as the world's most possessive mom. The plot concerns the yearly gathering of her three sons to celebrate her wedding anniversary to their deceased father, whom she hated. One son, Cossins, is a transvestite, which mother approves
of; another, Roberts, spites her by bringing home his pregnant girl friend; and the third, Hedley, who managed to marry, announces he's leaving the country. Mom tries to control these developments by telling Hedley that his children have been killed in a car wreck, putting her glass eye under the
pillow of Roberts' girl friend, and encouraging Cossins to steal women's undergarments off the neighbor's clothesline. Davis is great, but the film suffers from the staginess of the play on which it was based.
