The third part of Fassbinder's gangster trilogy, said to have been shot in 10 days, SOLDIER is the story of an American Vietnam vet of German descent who returns to his native Munich as a hired killer. Three policemen have retained his services to eliminate a number of "undesirables" they have a quarrel with. Through a series of events the mercenary ends up killing the girl friend of one of the corrupt cops. A gunfight ensues between the soldier, who is aided by his friend Franz (played by Fassbinder), and the cops. Though not for all tastes, Fassbinder's films are cynical examinations of traditional Hollywood styles. His films have strong elements of parody, and the freshness of his vision will be among the most lasting influences of the New German Cinema. AMERICAN SOLDIER is one of Fassbinder's earliest films (he made more than 40 before he died tragically in 1983 at age 37). It is not as strong or as developed as his later masterpieces, but it is well worth seeing. leave a comment
