A taut script and sharp, witty dialogue make this, the second of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes vehicles, one of the finest crime adventures ever made. Arch-villain Professor Moriarty (Zucco, in the first of many appearances as Holmes's chief nemesis) plots a grand theft by sidetracking Holmes (Rathbone) with two foul murders, one involving Ann Brandon (Lupino). As Holmes investigates the murders, Moriarty begins work on his real goal, stealing the crown jewels from the Tower of London.
