This thin grade-B take-off on Arabian Nights adventures is full of harem cuties, wide-edged blades, and stilted dialog. Derek plays the impoverished Persian barber, Hajji Baba, who aspires to win the milky hand of princess Stewart, and does so through clever moves, also managing to best Picerni, an evil-minded, power-hungry prince who lusts after Stewart and all the land of Persia. When this film was first released, audiences perceived the production as an inept mess and laughed where no guffaws were planned in the script, particularly when scores of fetching harem ladies broke their necks to seduce the frenetic, overly intense Derek. This unintentional comedy is below par on all levels. Song: "Hajji Baba" (Dmitri Tiomkin, Ned Washington, performed by Nat "King" Cole). leave a comment
