Manhattan-based interior designer Jane Emelin (Juliette Lewis) is dating much-older TV weatherman Greg Harrison (William Hurt) and planning to move in to a house in Westchester with him. Then the sudden death of her elderly aunt leaves Jane in a position to take over a spectacular, Greenwich Village floor-through apartment at an unbelievably cheap rent of $400 per month. She takes the apartment over Greg's protests, but quickly realizes her neighbors are a very odd bunch (shades of Roman Polanski's THE TENANT). Ground floor resident Martha Stewart (Shelley Duvall) — "not the famous one!" — is an inveterate busy body; the elderly couple (Lorna Millican, George Pottle) who live on the second floor are stone deaf and regularly lock each other out of the apartment; and the glowering super (Artie Lange), who's so weird he isn't allowed to have tenants' keys, gives her the evil eye every time they pass in the hall. Mr. Collins (Austin Pendleton), who lives on the third floor, seems all right, though Martha warns Jane to leave him alone. But the capper is the person who lives on the fourth floor, directly below Jane: Supposedly an 80-year-old woman, she never leaves the apartment, scatters trash bags around the hall and bangs on the ceiling when Jane so much as walks across the floor without removing her shoes. Jane also receives increasingly hostile anonymous letters that she assumes are from her downstairs neighbor, warning her to be quiet or suffer the consequences. When Jane isn't warring with her neighbors, she's peering out her window at the people in the building next door. In REAR WINDOW turn of events, she thinks she sees the aftermath of a murder and is terrified when the man she's been watching also turns out to be the locksmith (Tobin Bell) who responds to her call when someone jams her front-door lock. In another subplot, Jane's work begins to suffer because of her apartment problems, and assistant Cheryl (Sabrina Grdevich) starts exhibiting ALL ABOUT EVE-like tendencies. And then come the plagues of flies and mice. Though handsomely shot, this derivative thriller fails to lay convincing groundwork for its ending. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
