That Was Then...This Is Now: Review
Mark Jennings (Emilio Estevez) is a troubled teen whose father killed his mother and went to prison. Since the incident, Mark has lived with his best friend, Byron Douglas (Craig Sheffer), and Byron's compassionate, patient mother (Barbara Babcock). Although the boys are as close as brothers, they begin to grow apart as their time in high school draws to a close. Byron becomes more serious about life and gets a job. He also starts spending time with wholesome and emotionally mature Cathy (Kim Delaney). Disturbed by the change in his best friend, Mark reacts badly and becomes jealous of Cathy. Despite Byron and Cathy's efforts to placate his fears, Mark becomes more and more uncontrollable. Though filled with strong performances from all the principals, THAT WAS THEN...THIS IS NOW is thin material. We watch as Estevez's tortured character tries to come to grips with adult emotions and responsibilities, but we never really get a handle on what is inside him. Screenwriter-actor Estevez fails to provide any insight. What is refreshing about the film is that the teenagers seem real, with a keen sense of detail in the portrayal of their environment.
