An updated version of the Grace Miller White novel which made it to the screen three times before--with Mary Pickford in 1914 and 1922, and again with Janet Gaynor in 1932. This time Baker gives an effervescent performance as the tough title character who finds herself in the middle of a conflict when she moves to Pennsylvania Dutch country. She's on the side of a group of Mennonite farmers who sold land to a powerful chemical company and now regret the sale because of the pollution that resulted. In the middle of all the feuding, Baker finds herself falling in love with Mennonite Ging and eventually overcoming the prejudices his people have against her. The film is made worthwhile by James Wong Howe's superlative photography and by evocative location shots in and around Sonora, California. leave a comment
