Gaynor is cast as the fiery, seafaring daughter of sea captain Digges. Both live as squatters on the land of stodgy old Gillingwater. Their house burns to the ground, Digges is wrongly accused of a crime and sent to prison, and Gaynor is mistakenly believed to be an unwed mother. This
last bit of news causes her to lose her beau, Gillingwater's son, Farrell, whom she earlier saved from drowning. The discrepancies are cleared up by the finale and Gaynor marries Farrell. An average script which is saved by some fine performances, especially Gaynor's plucky Tess.
