Angeli is the title character in a stirring performance as a young Italian girl who marries GI Ericson during his stay in her village. He suffers through a hospital stay, but eventually gets back on his feet, bringing his new bride with him to the States. They move into his parents' small
tenement, causing tensions between them and his mother. A separation follows the arrival of their newborn, but by the finale the whole family is living peacefully. Rod Steiger makes his film debut as a psychiatrist. Based on a story from Alfred Hayes and Stewart Stern that won an Oscar nomination,
but unfortunately the story's power didn't translate as well as it could have.
