The life of Andrew Johnson, the only President ever to face impeachment proceedings by Congress (the motion to oust him failed by one vote), gets the Hollywood treatment in this slightly above-average biography. Heflin is the backwoods boy who flees a cruel tailor to whom he has been apprenticed and finds his way to the town where Hussey is schoolteacher. She teaches him to read and write and soon he is leading a voting rights crusade. When the Civil War erupts, Heflin's loyalties remain with the Union and when O'Neill (playing Lincoln) is re-elected in 1864, Heflin becomes his Vice President. When he succeeds O'Neill as president, he faces a great deal of opposition from senators who think he is taking too conciliatory an approach toward the defeated South. His enemies, led by Barrymore, bring assorted trumped-up charges against him but they fail to gather the needed votes and Heflin triumphs. Heflin gives a good performance, doing his man-of-integrity-under-pressure bit with his usual skill. Hussey is little more than a decorative and useful plot device but Barrymore is quite good as the senator determined to bring Heflin down. leave a comment
