Stanwyck is a tough taxi dancer collecting the title fee from sailors and the like while watching out for her naive coworker, Blane. One night, wealthy Cortez gives Stanwyck $100, which she in turn gives to Owsley, an impoverished resident of the boarding house she lives in, and with whom Stanwyck has fallen in love. Cortez offers to take Stanwyck to Europe with him but she refuses. Disappointed, Cortez fades into the background as Stanwyck and Owsley are married. The marriage, however, soon turns sour. Owsley turns out to be a wastrel and Stanwyck asks Cortez to give him a job. Owsley promptly embezzles $5,000 from the company and Stanwyck must again go to Cortez, this time to ask him for enough money to replace her husband's theft. Cortez, still in love with Stanwyck, gives her the money without protest. Owsley is angry at his wife's actions and walks out on her. Cortez again offers Stanwyck a trip to Europe so she can be divorced and marry him, and this time she accepts. This undistinguished melodrama has little more than a decent performance by Stanwyck to recommend it. Both Olive Tell and Harry Todd were cut from the final print before the film's release. This was Lionel Barrymore's third and last directorial outing. Barrymore was already suffering from the arthritis that was to eventually confine him to a wheelchair for the last 15 years of his life. The doctors prescribed drugs to ease the pain but they had the unfortunate side effect of putting the director to sleep, leaving the actors to work out scenes for themselves. Stanwyck later claimed that Barrymore had done all he could under the circumstances and that she simply had to try a little harder. Stanwyck received much better reviews than the film as a whole, and it marked one more stepping stone on her long and tedious road to stardom. leave a comment
