Tars And Spars

1946, Movie, NR, 88 mins

Another musical set in wartime that has an hilarious Sid Caesar (in his film debut) for comedic relief. The name of the film came from the Coast Guard show called "Tars and Spars" featuring Victor Mature. Drake can't get to the water despite being a seaman, but he still manages to end up a hero. This makes Blair think he's a fake, and it's up to Caesar to set everything straight. Platt adds some excellent dancing, and the songs are better than average. They include "Love Is a Merry-Go-Round," "I'm Glad I Waited for You," "Kiss Me Hello, Baby," "He's a Hero," "I Have a Love in Every Port," "I Always Mean to Tell You," "Don't Call Me After the War, Baby," "When I Get to Town," and "I Love Eggs" (Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn.) leave a comment
