Small-town thinking is examined in a small-time way, with only short bursts of originality and excitement. Franz returns to his tiny Maine home town from the Marines but is greeted coolly by most natives. Based on his past exploits as a youth, most town folk assume he has just spent the
time in jail. Only Patrick stands by him, believing that he has always been a good person. Finally, Franz proves himself worthy of respect by pulling off some heroic deeds to win over the townspeople and Patrick's heart.
