Like Sandip Ray's previous film, THE BROKEN JOURNEY, this is based on a screenplay by the director's late father, Satyajit Ray. A villainous landlord (Mohan Agashe) finds he's lost his shooter's eye, so he hires a casteless local (Om Puri) to assist him on hunting
expeditions and other unsavory pursuits. An essentially Oedipal clash inevitably results. TARGET is a flawed and somewhat predictable allegory, but the younger Ray displays intermittent touches of inspiration and enough directorial savvy that his continuing refusal to step out of his father's
shadow seems oddly willful.
