Hey, it's Jivetime Jimmy's Revenge! It's not, of course, but you could be forgiven for confusing this stupendously inept movie with the fictional 'hood picture for which Robert Townsend is auditioning in HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE: It vacillates between being a painfully inauthentic 'hood movie and some kind of street-smart fairy tale with no street smarts at all, and it appears to have been made by people whose knowledge of urban African-American fashions, speech and behavior is entirely cribbed from cheap Blaxploitation movies. Looking for some fun, aimless hustler Curtis (Kevin Thigpen) and his buddies rough up a couple of cops, one of whom turns out to be Curtis's high-school sweetheart, Tracy (Nicole Prescott). Curtis and Tracy renew their relationship, which leads to no end of trouble: She, after all, is not only a cop but is also married, while he is being aggressively recruited by Jamal (Ron Brice), a ghetto Robin Hood in Black Panther drag who's brought himself to the attention of the police by tarring and feathering rich white people. Calling itself a "fable" neither disguises nor excuses the fact that this film oozes inauthenticity from every frame. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
