Ross Hunter comes up with another story based on the "Tammy" novels by Cid Ricketts Sumner. After Debbie Reynolds' rousing success in TAMMY in 1957, Dee takes the lead in this tearjerker. Dee is a river-person, sad because her boy friend never writes to her from college. She takes matters into her own hands, floats her boat downriver to the local university, and enrolls. To offset costs she becomes an aide to Bondi (a staple in all the "Tammy" films), who is so delighted with her new worker that she moves onto the boat and rewards Dee with an expensive necklace. Dee has also caught the eye of handsome Gavin, a teacher on campus. Bondi's selfish niece Meade can't find her rich aunt, so she organizes a search party. She spies Dee with the necklace and has her arrested and Bondi brought up for a sanity hearing. Dee's earnestness comes through, and she and Bondi are cleared of every charge. With all this going on, Dee has completely forgotten about her old beau and finds true love with Gavin. Two sequels followed, TAMMY AND THE DOCTOR (1963) and TAMMY AND THE MILLIONAIRE (1967). leave a comment
