Reynolds shines as a country girl who saves Nielsen after a plane crashes in her backwoods area. The wealthy Nielsen invites her to his plantation. When her irascible grandfather, Brennan, gets himself arrested for selling moonshine, she decides to go. Though Reynolds is terribly out of place at Nielsen's, her refreshing outlook on life helps to bring all the miserable characters at the plantation out of their shells. Wray is classic as the bent-minded mother who wants to make the place identical to Tara in GONE WITH THE WIND. But everything blooms under the country girl's touch, including the love between her and Nielsen. This film was one of the top grossers in 1957, and rightfully so. It was also the film that really established Reynolds as a major box-office star. Three sequels followed, TAMMY TELL ME TRUE (1961); TAMMY AND THE DOCTOR (1963); and TAMMY AND THE MILLIONAIRE (1967). Contains the Best Song Oscar nominee: "Tammy" by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston. leave a comment
