Romero is a super-polite and well-dressed crook in Chicago in 1929. He constantly woos Gilmore, who has vowed to fight the temptation of being mixed up with such a bad guy. But Romero isn't all that bad. He takes Clements under his wing and really takes care of the poor people in his area
by getting rid of rival Leonard. He and Gilmore then take off for South America to start a new way of living. Berle is there for laughs, and Gilmore, when not fighting off Romero's advances, sings a couple of tunes. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Remade
