Don't be fooled by the title: No celestial beings hover over this Harlequin romance, played against a backdrop of the first rumblings of the Spanish Civil War. Adapted from Kate O'Brien's novelMary Lavelle, it revolves around an unsophisticated Irish lass (Polly Walker) who goes to Spain in the 1930s to serve as a governess for the wealthy and cultured Areavaga family. Headed by the kind yet passionate Dr. Vicente Areavaga (Franco Nero) and his menacing wife Dona Consuelo (Marisa Paredes), the Areavagas are a microcosm of Spanish society's divided politics: The doctor and his son Francisco (Vincent Perez) lean toward the leftist Republicans, while Dona Consuelo supports Franco's Nationalists. It's not long before Mary's passions are stirred up by the exceptionally handsome and married Francisco, and she stops writing to her Irish fiance. Mary is befriended by two other Irish expatriate nanny types, the older but flirtatious O'Toole (Ruth McCabe) and the oddball Conlon (Frances McDormand), who falls in love with her. We're supposed to be moved by Mary's spiritual and sensual awakening in the bosom of the Areavaga family and tumultuous-but-sensual Spain, but the gorgeous scenery and resplendent set design often overshadow the slender story. Director Nick Hamm has assembled a large and fairly distinguished international cast, but darned if he knows how to make their distinctive and distinctly disparate acting styles mesh.
