A pleasant outdoor adventure-comedy with a few songs sprinkled throughout to lift the proceedings out of the very ordinary. Sheridan is a saloon singer on the run from Gates, a federal agent. There are some charges against her which have been trumped up, but she has no faith in the judicial system, so she's taken refuge in a Northwest lumber area and hopes to hide herself in the tall timber. Hayden is a logger and a part-time preacher. He is widowed and is raising three children, Aaker, Grant, and Henley, but they need more than a dad who spends half his time chopping trees and the other half denouncing the Devil. When the kids meet Sheridan, they think she'd make a swell mother for them and they do their best to arrange that situation with Hayden. In the meantime local man-hungry widow Stanley is resentful of Sheridan's appearance because she was hoping to nab Hayden herself. Hayden comes to love Sheridan but she is shunned by the rest of the conservative community until she shows her mettle by killing a bear; getting rid of Reed, a former boy friend from her sordid past; making friends with Patrick, the woman who runs the town's dance hall. Finally, when the community needs some money to erect a new house of worship, Sheridan calls upon her show business expertise and stages a program that gets everyone hootin' and hollerin' and donating money for the church; then Gates arrives to announce that the charges have been dropped. Songs include "The Tale of Vermilion O'Toole" (Frederick Herbert, sung over titles by Dusty Walker), "Holy, Holy, Holy" (traditional, sung by choir), "Oh, You Red-Head" (Herbert, Milton Rosen, sung by Sheridan, Patrick, chorus), "Take Me to Town" (Lester Lee, Dan Shapiro, sung by the Pickett Sisters.) In a small role, that's Fess Parker as "Long John," and if you have a really sharp eye you'll notice comely Swedish actress Anita Ekberg. In 1953, she also made THE GOLDEN BLADE at the same studio. Another very attractive dance hall girl is Jackie Loughery, the former "Miss USA" (1952) who later married "Dragnet's" Jack Webb. leave a comment
