Russell is an advertising executive who becomes concerned about the way the wives of some of her clients are becoming jealous of her. She hires MacMurray, a struggling artist looking for a way to keep food on his table while working on his canvases. His job is to be Russell's assistant and to pretend to be her fiance. Enter Moore as one of Russell's clients who wants MacMurray to handle her account personally--and then some. Russell's strictly business attitude melts in the face of this unexpected competition, and she finds herself thoroughly jealous about her hired beau. While a slick studio product, technically adept and well-acted, the film is utterly predictable. From the time MacMurray makes his entrance, it's only a matter of time before he and Russell end up in each other's arms. This was Russell's first film as a free-lance actress after the expiration of her MGM contract. Her role was originally intended for Claudette Colbert, but Colbert was suddenly reassigned to THE PALM BEACH STORY (1942) after Carole Lombard was killed in a plane crash while on a war bond sales tour. MacMurray is his usual bland, likable self, not terribly convincing as an artist. Macdonald Carey makes one of his first screen appearances, but the best reason to view this film now is to see the delightful Robert Benchley as Russell's partner at work in a number of funny routines. The film earned Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Interior Decoration. leave a comment
