Cortez plays a young Jewish surgeon who takes his blade to his father, Ratoff, to remove a tumor but fails under the pressure, leaving his father dead. Reluctant to go to the operating table again, Cortez is forced back into surgery when his girl friend persuades him to operate on her. But this time the operation is successful, giving the young man back his self-confidence. Although the surgery scene is handled in a convincing style, it is hard to believe any doctor would be allowed to operate on any member of his family, but that is what allows this film to go into its forced sentiment. The performances are all wooden and have little resemblance to real people. Max Steiner's first complete score tends to be a bit heavy-handed. This was also the first film for Ratoff. It cost RKO $270,000 to produce. leave a comment
