In the 1880s, Brooklynite Madeleine Marlowe (Betty Grable) returns to the US from England, where she gained great notices on the musical-comedy stage as well as the interest of a British nobleman (Reginald Gardiner). Back home, Madeleine's onetime boy friend, Sam Mackeever (Robert Young), is a reporter for the scandal sheet Police Gazette. Under orders from his editor (Adolphe Menjou), Sam exposes Madeleine's dubious past: she is, in fact, the former Rosie O'Grady, a beer-hall performer who toiled in New York's Bowery. Destroying his ex-lover's chance to become a peeress of the realm, Sam gets revenge for being jilted, while in turn Rosie/Madeleine exposes the reporter as a scheming rat. They are, of course, madly in love. The slim story is enhanced by many songs, most written by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon. The use of Young's light baritone is wisely kept to a minimum, and the good color work, nice sets, and costumes all contribute to the authentic period flair. The Warren-Mack songs include: "My Heart Tells Me," "My Sam" (sung by Grable), "Oh Where is the Groom?" (sung by Grable, chorus), "The Wishing Waltz" (a production number that features choreographer Hermes Pan), "Going to the Country Fair," "Get Your Police Gazette." Other songs include: "Battle Cry" (Maude Nugent, sung by Irene), "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" (Nugent, sung by Grable, Young, Menjou), "Sidewalks of New York" (Charles Lawlor, James Blake), "Two Little Girls in Blue" (Charles Graham, sung by Grable, Young), "Little Annie Rooney" (Michael Nolan, sung by Young, Grable, Orth), "Heaven Will Protect the Working Girl" (Edgar Smith, A.B. Sloane, sung by Young, Grable), "Waiting at the Church" (Fred W. Leigh, Henry E. Pether, sung by Grable, chorus). leave a comment
