The suspense builds so deliciously throughout this somewhat sadistic thriller that for years audiences were furious that Hitchcock decided to tack on a happy ending. No matter: Joan Fontaine nabbed an Oscar for her portrayal of a plain heiress who begins to suspect that her dashing but penniless husband (Cary Grant) may be trying to kill her.
