If Shaft was about the white Hollywood power structure dipping a toe into niche marketing for African-Americans, then this raw look at ghetto lives and lifestyles from director Gordon Parks Jr. was a declaration that black filmmaking had its own agenda. It's a prime slice of blaxploitation as both entertainment and social commentary, and Curtis Mayfield's score ranks as one of the finest soundtracks of the 1970s.
