Stevens, sheriff of a small Missouri town, is thought to be a coward when he does not stand up to the bad guys. Koch, who loves Stevens, remains loyal to him. Adorf, the gang leader, threatens to expose Stevens' former association with the gang should the sheriff try anything. The gang attacks a widow and a minister, killing the minister's son, but Stevens fights back and kills the murderer. However, the townspeople are still unhappy and take away his authority. Stevens' past is finally revealed and his wife leaves him. Koch is killed and Stevens goes after the remaining outlaws. He kills them all and regains both the townspeople's respect and his wife's affections...
