Young American Jessie (Ethan Hawke) and wise, childlike Celine (Julie Delpy), a French student, meet on a train traveling from Budapest to Vienna and get to talking. Twelve hours later, they're still at it, having crammed a good six months' worth of idle chatter into
a long night and a scrap of the following day. To be sure, most of what they have to say veers between the pretentious and the hopelessly juvenile. But they're sweet kids who only want to connect, and you'd have to be a creep to hate them for it. The weight of the film rests on the shoulders of
Hawke and Delpy, and they're both remarkable.
