The Sundowners

1950, Movie, NR, 83 mins

Not to be confused with the far superior Fred Zinnemann movie of the same name, this is a routine western distinguished only by Hoch's camerawork. There are three brothers in the Cloud family. The eldest is Preston, a desperado. His kid brother is John Drew Barrymore (in his movie debut), who loves Preston and wants to emulate him. The middle brother is Sterling, who is adored by Downs, but she is married to Elam. When Preston kills Elam, that paves the way for Sterling and Downs to cement their relationship. There are rivalry between cattlemen, rustling raids, lots of gun play, and a feud between Preston, who dominates the family, and Sterling, who wants to have his own section of land on which to live peacefully. Despite Preston being the star, it is he who gets gunned down at the end in order to bring serenity back to the land. Western fans will find much to like in this typical range war epic, but it doesn't really provide much for anyone else. Barrymore was 18 at the time he made this and was using the "junior" designation in his name. That continued until 1956, when he decided to bill himself as John Drew Barrymore. He went to Europe and made a series of forgettable costumers until 1964, when he returned to the US Late in the 1960s, he opted out of show business for a while for a life of meditation in the desert. A few years after that he came back to Hollywood and can be seen from time to time in small roles on TV. leave a comment
