In Africa at the onset of WW II, the Germans try to get the local tribes to rebel against the British colonials. Capt. Bill Crawford (Bruce Cabot) is a local commissioner who, with the help of military man Maj. Coombes (George Sanders), discovers the German plot to run guns to the natives; Zia (Gene Tierney) is the adopted daughter of an Arab who now runs some trading caravans and trading posts. Zia agrees to help the British and joins Kuypens (Carl Esmond), the local undercover Nazi chief, in order to find out more about his plans. Despite some thrilling action sequences, this is little more than a standard B-western plot with an exotic setting and touches of British imperialism, with a bit of wartime patriotism thrown in for good measure. The Nazis are evil personified, the British all that is good in the world. Henry Hathaway's direction is to the point, the cast does a good job with the material, and some fine photography makes good use of the sets and locations. The film earned Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Interior Decoration, and Best Score. leave a comment
