Academy Award-winning director Michael Cimino's first film in six years -- his last was the half-baked remake of DESPERATE HOURS -- is a ludicrous road picture larded with enough New Age claptrap to try the faith of even the most harmonically converged. Woody Harrelson stars as Dr. Michael Reynolds, an ambitious young L.A. oncologist with a successful practice, a glamorous and shallow shrew of a wife (remember, it's a Cimino film), and a dismissive skepticism about everything not directly explicable by DNA. Kidnapped by terminally ill patient Blue (Jon Seda) -- a 16-year-old convict of Navajo descent -- Reynolds unwittingly embarks on a spiritual journey, as the two cross the Arizona desert in search of a mythic mountain lake Blue believes will cure his cancer. That Blue functions merely as a catalyst for a white man's spiritual regeneration -- the cure that really counts here -- is a major problem. A bigger one is Cimino's inability -- or unwillingness -- to take the film's fairy-tale spirituality seriously: If he can't, then why should we? Anne Bancroft's cameo as a dippy desert hippie sums up the dilemma: It seems meant to point up Reynolds' spiritual emptiness, but ends up making a cruel mockery of Blue's faith as well. leave a comment
