Pretty young Ruriko (Eba) and her motley gang of women sumo wrestlers fight to save their training center in this T&A chopsocky comedy. Ruriko teams up with a former sumo champion, Arakuma (Arase), to assemble a cadre of female wrestlers and train them in the “ancient art” of female sumo wrestling in order to protect Ruriko from her yakuza creditors. Their first problem is finding willing recruits; two spaced out streetwalkers and an endlessly sobbing young mother are the best they can manage. Still, the training begins, with many scenes of stretching, wrestling, and running. The action really heats up, however, when the girls run into yakuza thugs and Arakuma is not there to protect them. To their rescue comes the beautiful leather-clad Komasa (Kei Mizutani), who dispatches four pipe-wielding goons in short order. It turns out that Komasa is a former sumo wrestler herself, and she's eager to get back in the ring. Komasa joins our heroines just as the head yakuza, Domino (John Billingslea), is introduced to One Eyed Oryu (Shouko Kudou) and her sumo sidekicks. Apparently there are more lady sumo wrestlers out there than suspected, and these bad gals want a piece of Ruriko and her gang. We learn in a flashback that there's bad blood between Oryu and Komasa; they were once junkie lovers and Oryu lost her eye in a fight with Komasa. This lengthy flashback is the centerpiece of the film: a soft-core lesbian sex scene followed by an energetic fight between the two former lovers. (And could Komasa’s denim cutoffs could be any more cut off?) The action builds to a winner-takes-the-training-club battle between the rival gangs, and the contest is decided in a final graphic fight between Oryu and Komasa. The plot provides enough excuse for the wrestling and fight scenes, and the idea is pretty unique (at least by U.S. standards). If watching topless Japanese women wrestling is your cup of tea, you might want to give this a try. leave a comment --Reed Lowrie
