An almost lyrical look at the the relationship between a young boy and his new stepfather. The man treats the boy with an unusual amount of kindness, which continues to grow until their attachment becomes so strong the boy cannot bear to be separated from his stepfather. More engrossing to Western eyes than the simple plot line are the views of day-to-day life on the collective farm--as seen from the perspective of the boy--which is managed by the youth's Stakhanovite stepfather. A first feature film from a talented young team of directors who linked up as film students, making their diploma film together. Actor Bondarchuk is also a talented director of epic films such as the four-part WAR AND PEACE (1968) and WATERLOO (1971). (In Russian; English subtitles.) leave a comment
