Suddenly It's Spring: Review

A pleasant romantic comedy with a switch on an old formula. MacMurray and Goddard had been a husband-and-wife team of lawyers before the outbreak of WW II. They weren't getting along and decided to call it quits but had to wait until after the war was over to file the papers because Goddard went into the Women's Army Corps to serve her nation. Now that peace is established, she's not sure that she wants to divorce MacMurray. Whelan is MacMurray's new sweetie and does her best to get MacMurray to demand the papers be signed. At the same time, Carey is one of MacMurray's clients and has the hots for Goddard, but he won't move in until the final documents have been duly signatured. The more MacMurray pressures Goddard, the less likely she is to agree to the divorce. Several romantic complications later, the two are reconciled and Whelan and Carey are left out in the cold. It's a light piece and the jokes are sound, but the underpinning is weak and far too predictable. The same plot has been seen too many times before on the movie screen and will probably continue to be seen on television for ever and ever. Binyon had been writing superior screenplays for years, including IF I HAD A MILLION; THIS IS THE ARMY; YOU BELONG TO ME; and many more. This was his first producer's assignment. He later tried his hand at directing with THE SAXON CHARM; AARON SLICK FROM PUNKIN CRICK; and several others before his death at 73 in 1978. Binyon is supposedly the former Variety editor who wrote the world-famous headline when the stock market crashed, "Wall Street Lays an Egg." leave a comment
