Collegiate spitefulness drives this smug picture, which lacks the style and sharp writing it would need to really put the screws to the viewer. Cocky, wisecracking Midwestern college-boy Guffy (Sean Gunn) likes to stir up trouble in off-campus bars and has the force of will to drag his friends along for the ride. Backed up by weak-willed, Tom (Kevin Patrick Walls), Guffy challenges two Wisconsin rednecks to a game of pool that degenerates into a brawl. Guffy, who's dating the sexy Cynthia (Judy Greer), lets his sadistic impulses run wild when Tom's sensitive friend, Banyon (Jamie Kennedy), pays a visit to their dorm. Guffy arranges for Banyon to be doused with water and stripped of his clothes, and Tom feels Guffy has crossed the line; he encourages Guffy's entourage to team up and throw a scare into the bully. With their faces covered, Banyon, Jeff (Rick Hitchman) and Nort (Tait Smith) pose as pool-playing townies and tackle Guffy in the woods. But the prank goes awry and Guffy suffocates. Tom, Nort and Jeff are remorseful, but Banyon is delighted that his tormentor is dead. The panicky conspirators blame each other, and their hard-won decision to bury Guffy's corpse doesn't give Banyon a moment's pause. In the darkness of the forest, the frat boys' true personalities emerge and the apparently ineffectual Banyon proves to be a flat-out sociopath, as Cynthia and Jeff learn the hard way. Tom and Nort must figure out a way to escape Banyon without landing themselves in jail for murder. The film's characters are an exceptionally unappealing bunch and the film's cloddish use of flashbacks doesn't make them — or the familiar story — any easier to take. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
