The world of teenage hookers in Times Square is a ripe topic for a film produced under the guiding hand of Roger Corman; but rather than exploit the situation for some sensationalistic drama, STREETWALKIN' takes a hard and intelligent look at the subject. Cookie (Melissa Leo), an innocent young girl arriving in New York with her younger brother, Tim (Randall Batinkoff), is spotted at the Port Authority bus station by Duke (Dale Midkiff), a pimp. Cookie is soon working for Duke and is introduced to the harsh, brutal world that comprises the underground life. Midkiff gives a tour-de-force performance that is well supported by a fine cast of character actors. Julie Newmar is a particular standout as an old hand at the street life. Director Joan Freeman, who cowrote the screenplay with her husband, Robert Alden, shows a remarkable talent for capturing the sights and sounds of this seamy world. Freeman works a gritty realism into the formula story, creating an always-fascinating tale from an ugly subject. leave a comment
