Director Elia Kazan and most of the cast of the smash Broadway production made the trek west for the film version of Tennessee Williams controversial play, save one: Jessica Tandy, who studio chiefs felt wasn't well known enough to reprise her star turn as Blanche DuBois on the big screen. Karl Malden, Oscar Winner and Acclaimed Character Actor, Dies at 97

Academy Award winner Karl Malden, who starred alongside friend Marlon Brando in such classic films at A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, and won another generation of fans with the TV show The Streets of San Francisco, has died. He was 97.

Malden died of natural causes, his daughter Mila Doerner told the Los Angeles Times.
