Davison is a college student who joins the protest movement because he hopes it will provide him with an in with a girl he is pursuing. Instead he becomes passionately involved in the larger cause, is beaten up, and is even accused of being a communist. Contemporary audiences were shocked by the film's depiction of the violence police use to break up sit-ins and protests. Although its intentions are good, THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT tries to do too many things at once and fails to make a real statement.
