An excellent film version of a novel by Ursula Parrott, this is the story of Norma Shearer's undying love for newspaper reporter Neil Hamilton. She follows him to Mexico, but he leaves her to cover a story in China. Distraught, she travels to Europe, where she plays with a series of lovers but remains obsessed with Hamilton. Tired of her vagabonding, she returns to New York, ostensibly to marry Robert Montgomery, her suitor since childhood, who has kept his love for her alive with a sense of humor and a well-exercised drinking arm. Re-enter Hamilton, ready to marry Shearer until he hears of her European dalliances. Shearer contemplates suicide (in the novel she goes through with it), but Hamilton reconsiders and they tie the happy knot. This was the second Parrott work that provided the basis for a Shearer film, following in the wake of THE DIVORCEE (1930), which was based on Ex-Wife. leave a comment
