Strangers Kiss: Review
A stylish, charming, honest, romantic, and obsessive look at filmmaking during the B-movie days of the 1950s that transcends its period setting and speaks to filmmakers and viewers of all times. Stanley (Peter Coyote) is a crazed, manipulative director who is driven to make his picture "Strange and Dangerous" at all costs. With his sheepish, boy-wonder producer, Farris (Dan Shor), at his side, Stanley meets with gangster Frank Silva (Richard Romanus) about funding the film. The likable but dangerous Silva agrees, with one condition--that his girl friend Carol (Victoria Tennant) get the lead role. Distressed at the lack of chemistry between Carol and her dopey, insecure costar, Stevie Blake (Blaine Novak), Stanley plots to have his stars fall in love, a scheme that will permanently sever his financial tie with Silva. Photographed in cool, vibrant color reminiscent of the 1950s and scored with a jazzy saxophone melody, STRANGERS KISS stuns with one fresh scene after another. The film shines on all levels, from technique to acting performances, from the direction to the script. What is most apparent in STRANGERS KISS is the director's and screenwriter's love for filmmaking. For anyone who is enthralled by that strange species known as "filmmakers" or for those who just love well-made entertainment reminiscent of a bygone era, STRANGERS KISS is highly recommended.
