Thoroughly predictable but surprisingly funny, this Australian odd-couple comedy in which money, not politics, makes the strange bedfellows of the title stars macho middle-aged actors Paul "Crocodile Dundee" Hogan and Michael Caton as longtime friends who pretend they're lovers to exploit a new tax bill allowing same-sex couples benefits identical to those of their heterosexual counterparts. Down-on-his-luck cinema owner Vince Hopgood (Hogan) turns to mechanic and firefighter Ralph Williams (Caton) when his angry ex-wife demands Vince pay his share of a stack of back taxes. Ralph offers a shoulder to lean on, but has serious doubts about Vince's apparent plan to remedy his financial crisis. Vince figures the newly approved tax bill offers a foolproof way to erase his debts; all he needs to do is convince Ralph to play his gay partner. Ralph isn't convinced they could pull off the deception, especially since they've both been married, and worries about his reputation; he agrees to the scam only after Vince assures him no one in their small town will ever find out. With their application mailed and an appointment with the tax investigator (Pete Postlethwaite) who'll verify their relationship set up, the new "couple" sets about perfecting their compatibility, which involves a crash course in gay culture that culminates in a trip to Sydney's gay bars. Vince appears to get into the groove effortlessly, but it's Ralph's struggle to come to grips with his new lifestyle that provides the fish-out-of-water comedy that carries the film. All in all, the film works well despite the predictability of the expected mishaps that ensue when the men realize that they can reap unexpected financial awards if they're just willing to cut loose some of the macho mannerisms by which they've always defined themselves. leave a comment --Allison Corneau
